Make a gift of securities to the Champions for Life Foundation

Make a gift of securities.

A donation of securities or mutual funds is the most efficient way to give charitably. Since capital gains taxes don't apply, our charity receives the full fair market value when the security is sold, and you get a tax receipt which reflects your larger contribution. This allows you to give more and get more.

How it works:

CanadaHelps, our trusted partner, will process the donation of your security on our behalf. Here’s how it works:

  • Complete the online pledge: Include details about your donations of securities or mutual funds. Once complete, download the Letter of Direction form. You will also receive an email confirming your pledge. CanadaHelps will receive and process your pledge.

  • Send the completed Letter of Direction to your broker authorizing the transfer of your shares to CanadaHelps. The transfer typically takes 1 to 2 working days to settle within the CanadaHelps account.

  • CanadaHelps will promptly sell the shares. Once proceeds are received, CanadaHelps will send you a detailed confirmation email with your charitable tax receipt and disburse the proceeds from the sale to our charity.

Do you use a Direct Investing platform such as RBC Direct Invest, TD Waterhouse Direct Investing, Scotia iTrade, or QuestTrade? You may need to complete the Letter of Authorization/Direction Form from your Direct Investing firm. The Letter of Direction we provide at the end of your pledge includes all the information you will need to complete their form.

Questions:

  • Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes. Donations made through www.canadahelps.org, or through one of CanadaHelps’ software tools for charities (excluding Ticketed Events) or business partners, are legally made to CanadaHelps CanaDon, a charity registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (Registration Number: 896568417RR0001), and CanadaHelps CanaDon issues the official tax receipt.

  • What confirmation should I expect to receive once my donation has been made?

A confirmation email is sent out as soon as the donation is processed. This confirmation email will list the donation amount, the name of the recipient charity, as well as your tax receipt. For monthly donors, you will have a choice if you’d like to receive a confirmation email when the transaction is processed. If there are errors with monthly donations (ie declined credit card) an email will be sent notifying you as the donor that the gift has not been processed.

For multiple monthly donations, a confirmation email will be sent for your donation(s) to each charity.

  • Is there a minimum donation for me to get a tax receipt?

The minimum donation amount required in order to receive a tax receipt is $3.00

  • Can I donate from outside Canada?

CanadaHelps accepts international donations, but the donations will always be processed in Canadian currency. For example, if you donate $50, your card will be charged 50 Canadian dollars, and your financial institution will make the conversion to your local currency, based on the current exchange rate. Please note that CanadaHelps is a Canadian charity and only issues Canadian tax receipts.
