What Is Physical Literacy?

Physical literacy is the development of fundamental movement skills needed for daily activities, physical activity, sport and movement. Physical literacy is essential for a child’s optimal growth and development. It sets the path for a life-long relationship with physical activity, learning new skills, and pursuing physical and mental health.

Although physical literacy can be developed at any stage in life, it is best to start early because intensive brain development forming critical neural connections occurs in the early developmental years.

What makes us different?

Our Approach

We bring meaningful movement experiences to children ages 4-12 by supporting school leaders, physical education teachers, educators, and after-school care providers to integrate physical literacy into their schools & classrooms.

1. A Targeted Approach

The most critical age to make a difference is between the ages of 4-8, as their activity level declines significantly once they begin school. Surrounded by peers, they also begin to form their attitudes toward physical activity and their own ability.

2. Aim to Empower

We help children improve their movement competence, knowledge and confidence so they feel empowered to unlock their abilities and begin the journey to becoming active for life.

3. Accessible and Inclusive

Our programs and resources provide children of all abilities with the opportunity to be involved in high-quality, accessible physical activities in a safe and positive environment.

4. Fun and Engaging

We help children develop their physical literacy through fun games and dynamic activities. Our curriculum engages every child to help build the confidence and competence to succeed in recreation, sport and life.

5. Measurable Results

All Champions for Life programs and resources are structured, evidence-based, progressive, and customized. We make it easy to bring physical literacy to life and make a lasting impact in children’s lives.
