Champions for Life Foundation

Caitlin's Summer Journey

My name is Caitlin Downey and this summer I worked for Champions for Life Foundation as a Program Leader. I had the privilege of working with the team on various projects, including leading our program at multiple camps. At the camps we taught the children to become more physically literate by developing their fundamental movement skills.

What was your favourite part of working for the Champions for Life Foundation this summer?

My favourite part about working for Champions for Life Foundation was working with their amazing team and with the kids at camp. Everyone embraced me as a new member and I got to work closely with each of them on various projects. One of the many benefits of working on a small team is that I was able to work and see the many different aspects of the foundation. I also enjoyed going into camps and seeing our hard work pay off by leading sessions using the physical literacy program to teach and motivate the children to move well. Being active has always been important to me and this summer I was able to be active every day while engaging the children in the program. It was extremely rewarding to see the kids so happy, engaged and acquiring new skills!

What skills did this role help you develop?

Over the summer, I have learned a myriad of skills that will benefit me in the future. I definitely have learned how to be self-disciplined. Working primarily from home, I had to keep myself accountable, focused and on task. I learned how to work professionally in a group setting and how to apply skills learned elsewhere to my place of work. I developed my teaching skills and discovered a love of educating children, assets that I truly value. Working with a small group of people, I was lucky to be able to see many sides of working and running a foundation. I saw the hard work that goes into creating the program and units, the challenges of running the program in action, the social media, marketing and prospecting skills it requires, and the outreach to expand the foundation. Although I have been taught these skills in school, I had never seen them all together in action. It takes an incredible amount of skill, dedication and teamwork to build and work for a foundation.

What part of your role was most rewarding?

This summer, I absolutely adored working  closely with the children at camps. Although I have worked with children before, I have never been in a ‘teaching’ position, but rather a referee or as a friend. I developed a love for educating children. It was so rewarding to see children succeed at the various skills and movements we taught them. They may have struggled at the beginning, but learned throughout the sessions and became better at new skills.

I had the best time this summer working for Champions for Life Foundation. Their mission is so incredible and it is truly amazing to see the hard work of such dedicated individuals turn into something so spectacular and moving.
