Building Junior Leaders in Physical Literacy

The Champions for Life Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to helping children, families, schools and communities become more active by enabling them to develop their physical literacy. We deliver fun and active physical literacy programs to schools, serving Kindergarten, grade 1 and grade 2 students. These efforts help young students acquire the necessary fundamental movement skills to play and be active throughout their lives.

This year, in collaboration with the Lester B. Pearson School Board, Champions for Life launched a NEW pilot program to help develop Junior Leaders in our schools. Junior Leaders help lead the after school program by assisting with the Champion's Challenge stations, helping to demonstrate skills and helping to set up and put away equipment.

Physical literacy ambassadors

Being a part of the Junior Leaders group is a privilege at Champions for Life and is geared for students in grades 5-6. Junior Leaders are coached to become ambassadors of physical literacy with the program aimed towards learning fundamental movement skills, group management and leadership qualities.

What it means to be a Junior Leader:

  • Be a positive role model.
  • Be kind.
  • Help others.
  • Be responsible.
  • Include everyone in games and activities.

Physical literacy workshop & training

On Monday, October 21st, 18 Junior Leaders and 5 Daycare Educators were selected to participate in a half-day Physical Literacy workshop at Lakeside Academy

This fun and active event included the review of:

  • The proper technique for performing fundamental movement skills so that the Junior Leaders can help the younger children;
  • Skills and tips on leading small groups of Kindergarten to grade 2 students; and,
  • Games and challenges that help develop physical literacy.

Positive feedback from students

Based on feedback from the students, Daycare Educators and the Champions for Life team, the event was a big success! According to Joanne Lawson, Program Director at Champions for Life, "Working with the Junior Leaders was an absolute pleasure! They were positive, energetic, open to learning and took risks when demonstrating fundamental movement skills in front of the whole group."

We are confident that these newly inspired Junior Leaders will help promote physical literacy at their schools, and we look forward to seeing them in action!

Spring in Canada brings longer days, warmer weather, and the perfect opportunity to encourage students to get active. While physical activity is essential year-round, May and June (depending on your province) mark National Physical Activity and Sports Month—a time to celebrate movement, promote wellness, and inspire healthy habits in school communities.

In today’s academic environment, where high-stakes testing and rigorous curricula dominate the school day, recess is often perceived as a luxury rather than a necessity. Yet, research consistently highlights that quality recess is crucial in improving classroom behaviour, fostering social development, and enhancing cognitive performance.
