Toboggan Race

Each teams line up along a start line on one end of the activity space and races their "toboggan" to the finish line.

Hopping on one leg


  • I look forward
  • I spring on one leg
  • I hitch-kick (I swing my knee up then kick back)
  • I swing my arms opposite to my legs

Two-foot jump 


  • I get ready: squat with arms back
  • I take off: spring with my legs, swing my arms
  • I fly: extend my body into the air
  • I land: softly and with balance

How to play:



  1. Divide children into teams of 4. 
  2. Each team has 5 of the same coloured hula hoops. 
  3. Teams line up along a start line on one end of the activity space and place their hula hoops in a straight line in front of the start line. This becomes their “toboggan”.
  4. Each member of the team stands in one hula hoop leaving the last hula hoop empty.
  5. On your start signal, the last person in the toboggan picks up the last hula hoop and starts passing it to the person in front of them until it reaches the front of the toboggan. Each team member must touch the hula hoop as it moves to the front. 
  6. To move the toboggan forward, the child at the front of the line then places the hula hoop at the front of the toboggan and hops or jumps into that hula hoop. 
  7. The rest of the children then hop or jump into the hula hoop in front of them. 
  8. This pattern continues until all team members in the toboggan have passed the finish line. 

Variations:

 

  • Play outside in the snow! Use green and red food colouring to mark start and finish lines.
