Crab Walk Challenge

Feeling a bit “crabby" these days? This crab walk challenge will certainly lead to a few laughs while also being physically ACTIVE.

The Crab Walk Challenge is a fun activity that can easily be played indoors or outdoors. It’s a great way for the family to have some laughs while improving their strength, flexibility and balance.

Physical literacy skills in action

How to play

  1. Practice the crab walk position. Start by sitting on the floor, knees bent, feet flat facing forward, arms behind you with palms facing down. Then lift hips up off the floor.
  2. Choose an activity space that you can safely crab walk around. For example, hallway, backyard, basement.
  3. Designate a start line.
  4. Place several stuffed animals at the other end of the activity space.
  5. Two family members get ready at the start line.
  6. On the signal “GO!” crabs walk as fast as they can to the other end of the activity space.
  7. Crabs then pick up a stuffed toy, place it on their stomachs and race back to the start line.
  8. First crab back to the start line “wins”.
  9. The winning crab then challenges the next family member.

Add these variations

  • Pick different animal movements (e.g. giraffe, bear, crocodile, rabbit).
  • Go back and forth from the start line to stuffed animals and see who can balance the most number of stuffed animals on their stomachs.
