Reindeer Tag

Players move around the game area and have to stay away from the "taggers." Once tagged, they must freeze and create a balance pose of their choice. To get free, a peer must place a bean bag or “snowball” on top of the head or other parts of the “statue” and count to 10 out loud.

Skills in action:

Single-leg balance

  • I look forward
  • I spread my arms and lift one leg
  • I am still
  • I hold the pose 10 or more seconds

Kite pose

  • I look forward
  • I spread my arms, lift one leg to the side and lean the opposite way
  • I am still
  • I hold the pose 10 or more seconds

Airplane flying pose

  • I look forward
  • I spread my arms and lift one leg in the air
  • I am still
  • I hold the pose 10 or more seconds

How to play:

  1. Prior to the game starting you can demonstrate some suggested poses (e.g. single-leg balance pose, kite pose, airplane flying pose etc.).
  2. Place several hula hoops around the activity space.
  3. Place a bean bag or other light object (e.g. holiday stuffy) in each hula hoop.
  4. Choose 1 or 2 children to be "it" (for fun, place a reindeer headband on children that are “it”).
  5. Children run around the activity space (like reindeer) without touching the hula hoops.
  6. When they are tagged, they hop into a hula hoop and freeze into a balance pose of their choice.
  7. To free the statues, another child has to place the bean bag or “snowball” on top of the head or other parts of the “statue” and count to 10 out loud.
  8. The “statue” has to stay still for 10 seconds without the “snowball” falling off. Simply restart the count if the “snowball” falls.
  9. The bean bags stay in the hoop, once the statue is freed.

Variations:

  • Change the way the children move around the activity space (e.g. skip, gallop, etc.).
  • Add obstacle around the activity space that children have to jump over, onto or off of, obstacles to crawl through etc.
